Elderly patients aged 90 years and above, in South India.

Diabetes mellitus affects a large number of the elderly population. Diabetes and its complications could reduce the quality of life of the elderly and increase the healthcare costs of the society. Diabetes increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality in older people and the management of diabetes in the elderly requires special care and attention.    The NIHR funded the following research “Clinical Profile of Elderly Patients (Over 90 Years) with Type 2 Diabetes Seen at a Diabetes Center in South India”.

The conclusion of the research is Asian Indians with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and aged ≥ 90 years have significant differences and this is seen in their clinical profile compared with younger Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients.

THANDAVTaking HIIT ANd Dance to Adolescents for Victory over NCDs

The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation were awarded £150K in February 2020 from the Medical Research Council to investigate a novel high intensity, short interval, dance intervention for non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention in Asian Indian adolescent girls.

The University of Dundee’s NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Diabetes Outcomes Research project INSPIRED - small name only facilitated the collaboration between our partners from the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and pupils from Madras College, St Andrews to an exercise infused form of high intensity South Indian Bollywood style dancing.  Dance workshops have also been held in Chennai, Mumbai and New Delhi.   The research project will see further collaborations between the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation and the University of Dundee’s Institute for Sport and Exercise.

Learn more about this. by watching our YouTube video.

The INSPIRED - small name only project held a second PhD student Symposium when students based in Dundee and Chennai presented their research.  The Symposium was held over three dates.
